Want to pick up 30 seconds in your Night ITT at the stage race or minutes in
the XC race? Looking to learn how to handle the tight and twisties that are
key to success in the VisitPA.com MTB Stage Race weekend? Interesting in getting
a peak inside the pre-race routine of some of the Mid-Atlantic's fastest riders?
The VisitPA.com Team will be holding a pre-race clinic for Beginners and Sports on Friday, June 29th at 6:30PM prior to the Night ITT at the stage race.
The clinic, "How to preview the course and pick the fastest lines" will be presented by VisitPA.com Team members Mike Hebe and Ray Adams with assistance from Cadence Cycling and Multisport pro racer Kyle Hammaker.
Come out and learn a thing or two from some of the fastest riders in the area on a course that puts a premium on choosing the right line!
MASS MBSR and Festival Weekend POINTS PRIMER
Pay attention kids, we don't want to have to go over this again.
You'll be taking part in one, two, three, or four races over the three days. You can choose to do the bonus stage race and the XC. Or just the XC. Or just the bonus stages. Or just one of the bonus races. Or just the fun stuff. Or just beer. Or some combination that makes you happy. You can pre-reg for all these at www.bikereg.com
We'll be awarding the top finishers in all the races some prizes. Cash for experts other stuff for non experts. We'll also be awarding stuff for the fun events, but don't expect nuthin fancy for these - think box of cereal with perhaps a decoder ring inside if you're lucky.
MASS Points - We know this is a big concern so here is the scoop. The weekend has two batches of points available:
Batch One:
· Saturday's XC is worth the same as any other stand-alone MASS XC Race. First place points on Saturday are worth the same as first place points at any other XC race all season long (that was the easy part).
Batch Two:
· Take a deep breath and pay close attention...· Friday night's ITT, Sunday's STXC, and Sunday's MASS Start Hill Climb are worth bonus MASS Points equal to one MASS XC event.
· Standard MASS categories will be combined in the bonus races but will compete for the same bonus points (we are not separating out all age brackets - see categories info below).
· All finishers on each bonus stage will receive bonus points.
· The bonus points from the three bonus stages (remember that the XC does not count here) will be tallied together. No penalty for not doing all 3 of the bonus races, you just won't earn the points from them.
· The rider with the greatest number of bonus points will win the stage race overall.
· The top 60 stage race finishers in each category will be awarded an amount equal to one standard MASS XC race score that will be applied to his or her MASS points total.
· This allows you to take part in anywhere from 1-3 of the bonus stages and still possibly place in the top 20 of the bonus points (admittedly, this might be pretty tough to do).
· There are no bonus points available for anything to do with beer. Sorry.
Confused? Good, look for "MASS Stage Race Podium Spot" on Ebay later today. Bidding starts at $100.00.

Based on the combined scores from the ITT, STXC, & HC (the stage race)finishers will receive the bonus scores for their final GC rankings based on the MASS XC points schedule for each category (experts get expert XC points, sports get sport XC points, beginners get beginner XC points). 1st place in stage race = 1st place MASS XC points
Saturday's XC race will follow the standard MASS categorization of riders
The bonus points stage race events (ITT, STXC, HC) will have the following categories:
Beginners:
Beginner A - (SrI, SrII, VetI, VetII, Jr. Men, Jr III, Beginner Enduro)
Beginner B - (MstrI, MstrII, All Women, Jr II, Jr I)Sports:
Sport A - (SrI, SrII, VetI, VetII, Jr.X, Jrs, Sport Singlespeed, Sport Enduro)
Sport B - (MstrI, MstrII, All Women)Elites:
Pro/Expert A - (Elite Men, Seniors, Vets, Expert Singlespeed, Expert Enduro)
Pro/Expert B - (Masters, Women, Super Sport Women, Super Sport Master Men)
* Due to the nature of these events, we will not have separate age classes.
* These categories were determined based on comparisons of finish times from preceding race events and after long discussions of how to provide the best race situation for ALL participants in these bonus events.
To review:
· For each of the 3 bonus events, finishers in the six groups will receive a score.
· The scores for each bonus event are cumulative, therefore the more bonus events you participate in the higher final score you can receive.
· At the end of the three events, everyone who scores points for the 6 groups will receive Bonus Points toward INDIVIDUAL MASS SERIES standings.
· You have nothing to lose by entering these bonus events and they provide you with a perfect opportunity to experience mtn bike events other than XC (and get some bonus points!).
· There will also be merchandise prizes (beginner/sport) and cash (elite) for the top riders in each of these bonus events.
· Promoter reserves the right to combine starting categories, prize lists, etc.
The trails are on private property. The only pre-riding allowed is Friday afternoon
June 30th. Contact Mike Kuhn for more info kuhndog1@earthlink.net

Course Map (Print map by orienting page layout to "Landscape") - (note that there are two small course alterations that do not appear on the map)
*Course may be slightly altered up until race day. If it really rains, the course will have to be dramatically altered.
All courses on the farm are rolling, fast, twisty trails interspersed with sections of farm and field roads for passing. The course has perhaps best been described as a "rollercoaster."
We've added a few new sections of trail to extend the course and put in some fun obstacles. Speaking of, while there are not many (or any, except for this one pile of) rocks on this course, we've made up for it with a number of logs for your hopping pleasure. It is definitely tight and twisty, so don't expect to blast through everything at warp speed. You're definitely going to need to flow on this one. Please note that anyone found altering the course in any way, removing logs, or building up or removing ramps from logs will be bound and gagged and laid on the trail as yet one more course obstacle. I'll be certain to use you in the beginner race as well due to the common tactic of embedding the chainring in said obstacle to negotiate it.
All the courses start at the farm with the XC, ITT, and XC also finishing there. Each course comes close to or through the start/finish area several times and lots of great viewing spots are within a couple minutes walk from the main venue. Not only is the course fun for racers, it is a great course for spectators too!
Scoring for all races will be done electronically and each racer will receive a chip to attach to their bike. If for any reason you do not return your chip at the end of the weekend you will be charged a replacement fee (approximately $30).
Night Individual Time Trial
· Friday Night - First rider at dark
· Last rider starts at 11:00PM (if we have to go that long)
· Riders start at 30 second intervals
· Start slots for 240 riders total
· Must have fully functioning light system to participate or at least a darn good flashlight taped to your helmet
· The course is approximately 5 miles in length
· If registration warrants it (we get more than about 200 reg), beginners will be run during daylight hours.
Saturday XC & Endurance races
· Note slightly later than usual MASS start times due to Night ITT
· Approx. 7 mile lap (weather dependent).
· Very fun course. Lots of twists and turns. A few bridges. Practice your log hopping technique or you'll get lots of practice here. Has been described like riding a roller coaster.
· Full lap times in 40-45 minute range for top pro/expert riders.
· All beginners will do one lap, sports will do 2 laps, and elite/experts will do 3 laps.
Sunday Mass Start Hill Climb
· Sunday AM event. All riders off at about the same time (hence the whole "mass start" thing)
· Race from farm to top of ridge. Stop at top. Everyone comes down together after all racers have finished. We will all proceed down the mountain at an orderly pace to cross the paved state road (Route 850) at the same time. Do not start to descend before you are told or you will be tarred and feathered, drawn and quartered, peanut buttered and jellied, and DQ'd.
· Course starts out not too hard, pitches steeply, hits some pavement for a bit, gets steep, gets steeper, then gets rocky too. Lots of FUN!! I promise. Especially for SSers. · Event will take fast riders only about 15 minutes and slower riders up to 30 minutes to complete.
· Beginners stage part way up course, all will leave venue to ride together to beginner start location (slowly) at 10 minutes to start time.
Sunday (sorta) Short Track XC
· A very short cross
country loop that looks like a dirt criterium. If "criterium" might
as well be greek...maybe it actually is greek...then think 3-4 minute long laps
with a bunch of turns.
· Race for a set amount of time - for instance, beginners will race for
20 minutes - rather than a set distance.
· Great spectator event since you'll be able to see a lot of the course
from the start/finish area!
· On-Line at www.bikereg.com for race reg & camping
· By US Post with MASS entry form (pdf) Mail to: High Speed Cycling, 1061 Flowers Lane, Marysville, PA 17053
· Friday night 4:30-8:30pm for one or all events (w/ applicable late fee)
· Saturday 8:00am-2:00pm for XC and remaining stage race events (w/ applicable late fee)
· Sunday 8:00am-10:00am for remaining events, must register by 8:30am for hill climb
· Late Fee after noon on 6/27/06 by bikereg or US Post
· Sorry, NO REFUNDS
· Scoring will be done electronically and you will receive a chip to attach to your bike. If for any reason you do not return your chip at the end of the weekend you will be charged a replacement fee (approximately $30).

CAMPING
First and foremost, we will be limiting the number of campers so we don't overrun the farm. We are estimating it at around 80 sites -- a site equals one tent or RV. Note that if you camp and park inside the race course (main venue camping area) you will not be able to drive that vehicle from the venue until Sunday's races are complete. You may however drop your stuff off at your campsite and then park in the regular race parking lot (instead of parking in the camping parking lot) and come and go as you please. Again - park inside the course and you're stuck with me 'til Sunday afternoon, park outside and get away at will.
Camping Ammenities:
Drinkable, running
water will be available. Toilets will be Port-o-pots. Showers - bring your SunShowers!
We'll likely have an honest-to-goodness shower system but they'll be lukewarm/cold,
and if that doesn't happen there is a pond and a creek for you and your soap-on-a-rope.
1. Pre-register for a campsite on www.bikereg.com if you plan to camp. It will be the only way to guarantee a campsite. Any remaining sites will be given away on a first come - first served basis starting Friday, June 30.
2. Camping fees are $10/site/night. A site is defined as one tent or RV. You will get a camping tag that must be displayed on your tent/RV.
3. There are a number of different camping areas. If you are planning to camp inside the main venue area next to the start/finish you must have your car unloaded and moved to parking by 8:00PM on Friday.
4. To allow more people the opportunity to camp near the start/finish in the main venue camping area, no cars will be permitted in this camping area. We will have a campers' parking lot in very close proximity to the camp area where all campers may park their vehicles (or you can park them in the regular race parking lot which would allow you to leave the venue).
5. The main venue camping area set-up will work in the following manner. You will drive into the camp area and drop your camping materials off at your site. You will then drive your car to the parking area immediately so that we can keep the flow of traffic moving as we are expecting a high turnout. You may then walk back to your campsite to continue set-up. You will be reminded of this when you arrive at the venue. This is not applicable for all other camping areas.
6. We will not be taking special requests for campsite locations, the campsite will be filled from the back to the front to facilitate the flow of traffic.
7. RVs, pop-ups, and additional campsites will be located in the upper camping area slightly removed from the start/finish line (but still pretty close). Tent campers may use this area as well if a slightly less congested camping area is desired or once the main venue camping fills. Additional campsites are located in other areas-- if you choose to camp you do not have to camp at the main venue campsite even if there are spots left.
8. Some campsites will be available for those of you interested in camping and arriving on Saturday. Again, register on Bikereg.com if you are planning to camp. If you are planning to arrive on Sat. and camp you will not be able to bring your vehicle to the campground parking area and will be required to park in the regular race parking lot and hoof your stuff in from there. Some camping is available close to the regular race parking lot and you are certainly welcome to camp in those locations.
9. Campers age 17 and under must be accompanied by an adult.
10. Please
read the FARM RULES below.

www.daysinnharrisburg.comOr just search for Harrisburg hotels on www.visitPA.com. Almost all of the hotels in Harrisburg, Mechanicsburg, and even Carlisle are a max of 25 minutes away.
FOOD
There will be food & drinks available all day Saturday and Sunday. Chicken sandwiches, hamburgers, hot dogs, baked goods, drinks -- all at a very reasonable price provided once again by the Hammaker family! Breakfast will also be available Saturday and Sunday mornings. We'll have full dinners available Friday & Saturday nights.
There are 2 italian/pizza restaurants and the Marysville Diner, along with a couple stores, in Marysville (and you can ride your bike to them! only 1.5 miles away). Close to the hotels mentioned are a number of other options - another diner, fast food, more italian joints, subway, grocery stores, Pizza Hut, Chinese buffet, a couple bars - and within 20 minutes you'll find most of the popular restaurant chains.
1. NO DOGS - Big, little, pure, mutt we love them all, but we are not allowing them on the farm this weekend. The only dogs that should be running around are the family farm dogs.
2. No fires. You can bring your portable grills but no open campfires. We will have a bonfire going each night for your marshmallow roasting pleasure.
3. No pre-riding except for Friday afternoon July 8th. (World Cup Ski and Cycle in Mechanicsburg will be holding some rides at the farm in advance of the event. Please call World Cup - www.worldcupskiandcycle.com - for information if you would like to tag along on one.)
4. No smoking, even though you may be outside. Sorry but we're health conscious and there are other people who don't appreciate breathing that smoke, especially in the camping areas.
5. Kids supervised - You're invited and encouraged to bring your entire family to the event as we do have much more than just a bike race going on with things for everyone, even if it's just relaxing by the pond or fishing in the creek. However, we require that children have adult supervision while on the farm at all times and you, as the parent or guardian, must provide this supervision. There are 2 ponds and there will be no lifeguard on duty.
AND Kids in the pond - This is a big attraction for the youngsters and a great way for them to spend some time. However, please be aware that the boats and floating dock are the Oesterlings property and they must be treated with care. Abuse of these items or any other property will not be tolerated.
6. Keep it quiet during quiet times. Quiet hours are 11pm - 7am. There will be plenty of time for you to be rowdy and loud cheering on the other racers. Hopefully you'll all lose your voices from cheering and be too tired from racing for this to even be a concern.
7. Don't be a jerk. I'm the only one allowed to be a jerk all weekend since I'll be going on not nearly enough sleep each night and completely stressed about one thing or another. Since you're not promoting the race you don't get the leeway I'm affording myself. If you're a jerk you'll be asked to leave.
8. Respect the property. Three years in a row you've been perfect ladies and gentlemen and wonderful guests, which is why we're inviting you all back. Please remember that the Oesterlings live here all year long, have been incredibly supportive of mountain biking on this property, and are my in-laws so there is no way I can get away from them if you do things to upset them. Please be respectful of the property and thank the Oesterlings for their hospitality and support of our sport whenever you have the chance.
9. DO NOT LITTER. I'm not just talking here about the camping area where we will have some trash receptacles, but do not drop your used gel packs on the course. I know you're quite sure that those used foil containers are going to weigh you down and keep you from winning, but if you're caught littering the course you'll be DQ'd (and that don't mean I'm taking you out for a BliZzard). There is no reason to not put that packet back in your jersey pocket or under your leg band 'til the end of the race. The only place you will be allowed to drop the food wrappers is at the start/finish line/feed zone area where they must be picked up by a teammate or your support person.
10. Pack out what you pack in. Going along really well with #8 above. Bring a big ol' trash bag, put your garbage in your big ol' trash bag, put your big ol' trash bag in your car, put your car in your driveway, and put your trash in your trashcan at home. Thanks for helping us keep the place clean. We will have some trash receptacles around the venue, but helping us with little things like this keeps the event going because it keeps me, my crew, my folks, my inlaws, and my wife happy and this only keeps going if we keep smiling!
11. We reserve the right to create and impose further rules throughout the weekend as we deem necessary to reduce inconsiderateness (is that a word?) so that we can all have fun, be happy and get along.
Other Things To Do At The Farm - (Stuff for non-racing members of the family while the racer is out earning the bread and butter)
1. Fish - With both a pond and Fishing Creek on the property this is definitely something relaxing you can do between races - just be careful to stay off the course when casting that lure! (No lifeguard on duty.)
2. Swim/Float - Make use of that water again and bring your swimsuits and rafts or inner tubes for the pond. If the water is high enough in Fishing Creek you can walk out to the far end of the course and float back to the start finish area. A mile or two of the racecourse runs right along the stream so it's also a great way to get a front row seat for the action. (once again, this is at your own risk, no lifeguard on duty)
3. Hike - As noted somewhere else at least once in here I think (I wrote this in a pretty hap-hazard way so I don't really know what else I wrote so don't pay attention to any of it) is the fact that we're doing a 7 mile mtb course on about 100 acres of ground. In order to cram that much fun into such a small space this course has more curves than Pam Anderson even after a combination of her several "enhancements" and more twists than something really twisty. What that means for spectators and families is that they can get around and watch a whole lot of the racing pretty easily and see mom/dad/hubby/wife/kid suffering at a whole lot of different spots along the course.
4. Fun Events - In addition to the racin' we're also going to have some fun stuff going on like a "Slow Race" and who knows what else we might come up with between now and then.
Other Things to Do Off the Farm
There are a bunch of neat things in the general area that you might be inclined to check out over the weekend. We have a lot of stuff planned (and don't forget that if your car/vehicle is inside the course you won't be permitted to drive out until Sunday), but check out everything else that's going on this weekend in the Harrisburg area.
National Civil War Museum - You a buff of history? Or do you have trouble remembering if Lee was with the North or was it Grant? You can always give Ken Jennings a call or better yet, drop by the Civil War Museum in Harrisburg's Reservoir Park. A relatively new addition to the city, the Civil War Museum is chock full of interesting facts and restored items from this era of American history.
City Island - City Island in the Susquehanna River, with Harrisburg on the east and Wormleysburg on the west, has a sports complex, miniature golf, train ride & carousel, carriage rides, batting cages, beach & marina, and a village park with food. City Island is only 15 minutes from the race venue and could make a nice afternoon for the family. It is also home to the Harrisburg City Islanders semi-pro soccer team.
Harrisburg Capital Complex and Strawberry Square - One of the most picturesque State Capital buildings and complexes around, the PA State Capital complex is a wonderful feature of the city of Harrisburg. Join a tour or just meander thru the rotunda and grounds. Head across the street for some grub in Strawberry Square's food court where you'll find all sorts of wonderful choices.
Second Street and Downtown Harrisburg - Looking for some good grub or want to get out into the Harrisburg night life? 2nd Street is home to many wonderful restaurants, bars, and dance clubs.
Whitaker Center - One of Harrisburg's newest attractions, the Whitaker Center for Science and the Arts always has something interesting to see. Features include a 3D IMAX theatre and the Harsco Science Center (great fun for kids & adults alike!).
